In the US, automotive electric companies often use electric motor power units as horsepowers like it is used for ICE vehicles. However, motor power is used primarily in the case of EVs and usually denotes kilowatt.
Kilowatts are equivalent to 1.34 horsepower. Consequently, if you see an EV motor rated in kW, multiply that figure by 1.3 to determine precisely how much horsepower it has.
A battery powers an electric vehicle, and the battery contains energy measured by kilowatt-hours. If that device seems familiar, it’s probably because your utility company uses it to charge you for the electricity used in your home. For comparison, 33.7 kWh of energy is present in one gallon of gasoline.
The capacity of a battery can be measured in kilowatt-hours. For example, say a phone battery has a capacity of 1200mAh—this means the battery can power a device for up to 1,200 minutes (24 hours). In the case of an EV, if the battery is pointed at 60 kWh, that means the battery can generate an output of 30 kW (or about 40 horsepower) for two hours.
The amount of electricity needed to charge the battery of an EV will vary greatly depending on the efficiency of the car and driving style. Still, most EVs run perfectly fine while only using a fraction of what’s needed to power them at a constant speed. This means that when an electric vehicle brakes, some energy is recaptured through regenerative braking and can be used for other things around the house like powering stereos or electric appliances.
Usually, there are two types of battery capacity automakers quote, usable capacity and gross capacity. The usable capacity is the amount of battery energy the vehicle can draw on. At the same time, some automakers refer to “gross” or total capacity, which also considers buffers that stop the battery from totally discharging to zero.
DC Fast Charging
Usually, the electric vehicles use level 1, and 2 chargers which are AC sockets mounted on residential homes or commercial places. DC fast charging is the quickest kind of charging. It is designed to support electric vehicles (EVs) for long-distance travel and is typically found at charging stations in highway travel plazas or close to busy junctions; this is not something you would install at home.
During an EV Charging, the most productive range is between 5 and 80 per cent state of charge for the battery. Like your mobile phone, the battery’s charging pace lowers as it approaches fullness, and recharging the final 20% takes a disproportionately long time.
Most electric vehicle batteries are currently charged at home or office. Home charging comes in two varieties. The first, known as Level 1, uses a typical 120-volt wall outlet, while the second, Level 2, uses a more robust 240-volt circuit, similar to the one used to power an electric range or clothes dryer.
Those who drive their EV a minimum of 30-40 miles (48-64 km) daily need to install a dedicated level 2 charging equipment with a charging cord at their home or garage. Level 2 chargers, in general, recharge the EV batteries 10-20 times faster than the Level 1 chargers. The charging time also depends on the car’s acceptance and circuit output.
Drivers that use their car for very short distances every day should consider allowing the 120-volt outlet and the charging cord to power their vehicle rather than using it to go on much longer distances.
Today, several manufacturers offer to charge cords with interchangeable pigtails so that they can be charged from both 120-volt and 240-volt outlets. The public charging stations, operated by third-party charging providers, mostly charge at Level 2.
The rate at which an EV charger charges a battery is also measured in kilowatts. Depending on the power level that the built-in electronics of the automobile can tolerate and the power level that the charging hardware can offer, AC charging (Level 1 and Level 2) ranges from roughly 1.0 to 19.2 kW.
In the case of DC fast chargers, the range difference increases more. From the quickest offered for passenger automobiles, which runs as high as 350 kW, to a now-outdated standard of 24 kW.
The actual rate of charging depends upon the remaining battery charge, temperature and other factors. Using the car’s navigation system or one of the many apps (Plugshare, Chargeway), you may determine how fast your electric vehicle (EV) can charge and match it to the correct charging station.
