The following are the Amendments made by the Power Ministry in the Revised Guidelines and Standards
- Provision of an affordable tariff chargeable by the public electric vehicle charging station owners and electric vehicle owners.
- They enable electric vehicle owners to charge their EVs at their residences by using their electrical connections.
- A revenue-sharing model is suggested for land use. The goal is to make a public electric vehicle charging station viable from an operational perspective.
- Timelines have also been prescribed to provide connectivity to the public charging stations for a faster rollout of the EV public charging.
- Certain other technical requirements for the public EV charging stations have been elaborated.
The Government Plan for electric vehicle charging station infrastructure
You might wonder why there is an increase in demand for electric vehicle charging stations in India. As per the regulations of the government infrastructure, an electric vehicle charging station should be placed every 3 kilometres in cities and every 25 kilometres on both sides of the road.
In every 100 kilometres on both sides of the highway, charging stations for long-range and heavy-duty vehicles must be placed.
Besides, to boost industrial transportation, the country is also building an electric highway that connects Delhi and Mumbai. There is a scarcity of EV charging stations in India, and hence they are desperately required. The demand for EV charging stations in major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, and others is immense.
Therefore, the government plans to add over a thousand electric vehicle charging stations in the country before 2023. The government has already requested proposals from various power companies regarding the same.
Electric vehicle charging station Cost
Depending on the utilization of the charging stations and the amount of money involved, an electric vehicle charging station in this country can cost within the range of 1 lakh to 40 lakhs. These are some tentative estimates of the charging stations based on a more generic scenario and a supply of 250KVA EV stations.
If the charger type is CCS-60kW, the approximate cost will be Rs 12,50,000, and if the charger type is 2 AC-7/22kw, the approximate cost will be Rs 1 00,000. Again, if the charger type is Bharat DC-001 – GB/T, the approximate cost can be Rs 2,40,000; else, if the type of the charger is Bharat AC-001, the cost can be Rs 60,000.
The following points give you a detailed view of the cost of setting up an electric vehicle charging station in India:
- The cost of electricity connectivity might reach Rs 7,50,000.
- The cost of civil works is Rs 2,50,000.
- EVSE management software as well integration costs of Rs 40 000.
- Technician and workforce and the maintenance costs of around Rs 3,50,000 every year.
- For advertising and promoting the product, Rs 50,000 is required.
- The annual cost of a land lease is Rs 6,00,000.
Therefore, the approximate amount leads up to Rs 40,00,000 for the first year, including set up and if the land is at lease.
And the annual maintenance from the second year, including the land lease, is Rs 10,00,000.
Cost to Charge an Electric Car
Some electric vehicles provide two methods of charging, regular charging, which is compatible with household chargers, and the other one is fast charging which is used at a charging station.
The fast charging one significantly decreases the charging time, which benefits the owner. For example, a regular charger takes 7 to 8 hours to charge the vehicle fully. However, if a fast charger replaces it, the charging time is only about an hour.
You can charge your electric vehicle either at your residence or the station. Usually, suppose the owner is charging the vehicle at home. In that case, he keeps the vehicle charged overnight because it takes around 7 to 8 hours for the battery to get fully charged with the domestic power supply.
Whereas, if you are charging the vehicle at a station, the tentative charging cost is around Rs 160 to Rs 200 for a full charge. The total cost includes the cost of electricity as well as the overheads.
EV Charging Infrastructure the Requirements
- A perfect and permanent electric vehicle charging station requires a transformer and subsequent station. These, along with safety measures, must be installed.
- A 33/11KV cable and supporting equipment is required for termination and metering.
- Sufficient civil works must be in place.
- Enough room should be available for the electric vehicles to charge.
- All the mentioned steps require local authentication certification, although it varies from state to state.
EV Charging Stations in India
According to the Ministry of Power, electric vehicle charging stations have expanded by 2.5 times across nine megacities. The efforts made by the government enabled building the of EV charging stations in Pune, Surat, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.
As per the Government sources, more than 678 electric vehicle charging stations were installed in the cities mentioned in October 2021 and January 2022.
About 940 of India’s 1,640 public EV charging stations are placed in these cities. After setting up the EV charging stations in the megacities, the government plans to expand the coverage to other cities.
Some oil marketing companies have already announced the placement of 22,000 electric vehicle charging stations in different cities and national highways across the country.
EV Charging Stations News
As per the latest news, the Ministry of Heavy Industries had sanctioned about 520 EV charging stations for about Rs 43 crores. Under Phase-I, this took the place of the faster adoption and manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in the FAME India Scheme.
The minister also mentioned that a budget provision of Rs 1000 crores had been earmarked for five years (2019-2020 to 2023-2024) to establish the charging stations under Phase II of the FAME India Scheme.
Till now, 2877 charging stations have been sanctioned in 68 cities across 25 states/UTs under the second phase. Further, MHI has sanctioned 1576 such charging stations across 16 Highways and 9 Expressways under this phase.
Speaking about the future, in the coming years, we will witness a lot of improvement in the current charging technology. The demand for electric buses and electric cars would increase.
Big companies like Amazon and Walmart want to be environmentally friendly, and their present strategy is the deployment of zero-emission commercial vehicles. Due to that reason, the EV charging players are required to create mega chargers that would allow the long-distance operability of large electric vehicles.
In terms of growth, speed, and development, this makes the industry of electric vehicle charging one of the most promising ones. In 2019, the public EV chargers were about 85% compared to the previous year. However, in 2020, the growth was much less, probably due to the pandemic.
Today, most electric vehicle drivers charge their vehicles either at home or electric vehicle charging stations located at the office with slow chargers. We will surely see an increase in demand for fast and ultra-fast public EV chargers in the coming years. The charging process would be more convenient and would take a much shorter time at a lower cost.
